Our First Pinewood Derby

So, James is a very talented and smart person. But, let's be honest. Handiwork isn't really his forte. So...we were all a little nervous to see how the Pinewood Derby Car making would go.

Of course, Carson was super excited. What 8 year old boy wouldn't be?  They went to a friends home to cut out the shape of the car, and then we painted, added wheels and weights at home.

We warned Carson that his car was fun to make, but not to have too much hopes of taking first. Which sounds mean, but honestly, it helped because at the actual race, he was thrilled to come in 3rd for some of the races. I think he thought before we even got there that his would be last in every race. His car was not the slowest, and didn't lose any parts on the way down the track, which is what we as parents were going for.  He even came in 1st on a couple races, and 2nd for a few. Overall he was 7 out of 13. Perfect. Not the fastest, but not the last either. He was happy, and that's all that mattered.

He decided to make his car a "DOG". I was a little worried that he would think it was really cool, until he actually got to the race, and saw all the other kids "COOL" looking cars. BUT..surprisingly, he was happy with his little hound dog, "Speedy" all night. He did win "Judges Favorite" which he was thrilled about. (You know, one of those awards that the leaders make up at the actual race, so every kid at least feels good about something, no matter how slow their car is?!  Yeah- he loved it.)

Lots of concentration putting the cars on the track....

Watching the cars at the finish line.

Why do I think he's so cute?  Good job Carson. Way to be a great Sport, too!
